GEO

Generative Engine Optimization — improving visibility inside AI-generated answers and recommendations.

Definition

GEO is a newer term overlapping with AEO. It focuses on how generative engines (large language models acting as search) interpret, cite and recommend content. The signals matter: identifiable expertise, brand mentions across the web, structured data, clear authorship and a track record of accuracy.

GEO best practices include strong E-E-A-T signals (experience, expertise, authority, trust), pages that clearly state who wrote them, an unambiguous topical focus, frequent updates with substantive changes, and external mentions in trusted publications.

Example

An AI assistant asked 'what's the best 2FA method for personal accounts' will preferentially cite a page that has clear authorship, a documented review methodology, structured comparison tables, and external references — not a page of marketing copy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure GEO?

Imperfectly. Track citations in AI assistants you can audit; track brand-name searches; track referral traffic from AI products.

Is GEO a paid product?

No — it's a discipline. Be wary of services promising guaranteed citations.
