IP Address

The numeric label that identifies a device on the internet (or any IP network).

Definition

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is the equivalent of a phone number for an internet-connected device. IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.42; the newer IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8::1. Every packet you send or receive carries source and destination IPs.

Public IPs are visible to every site you connect to and can reveal your approximate location and the network you're on. ISPs may rotate yours periodically (dynamic) or assign one permanently (static).

Example

When you load a website, your device's IP appears in that server's logs alongside the page you requested. If you switch to a VPN, the server sees the VPN's IP instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone find me from my IP?

They can find your ISP and rough city; precise location requires more (legal process to the ISP).

How do I see my IP?

Search 'what is my IP' or use a privacy-respecting checker — but note this exposes your IP to that service.
