How it works

Paste or type any text. We count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and an estimated reading time at 240 words per minute. All counting happens in your browser.

Methodology

Words are sequences separated by whitespace. Sentences are split on '.', '!', and '?' followed by whitespace or end-of-text. Reading time uses 240 wpm (a common average for non-fiction prose); adjust your mental estimate up for technical material.

Frequently asked questions

Is the counter accurate?

Within ~1% of any other counter. Hyphenated words and contractions are counted as one word, which matches publishing convention.

Can I count words in a specific language?

Word-counting works for any language separated by whitespace. CJK languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) are better measured by characters.
